How to Transfer Your Authenticator App to a New Phone

Moving 2FA codes to a new phone without getting locked out: iCloud sync, screenshot import, and backup keys — the three-path migration guide.

Why Phone Upgrades Are the #1 2FA Lockout

2FA secrets live on the device, not in your account — that's the whole point. But it means a new phone doesn't automatically know your codes, and the most common 2FA disaster isn't hacking: it's trading in a phone while the only copy of your authenticator lived on it. The fix is choosing a migration path before you need one.

Path 1: iCloud Sync (the Zero-Effort Way)

If iCloud sync is enabled in Authenticator App 2FA, your encrypted vault follows your Apple ID. Sign into the new iPhone, install the app, and your codes are already there — the upgrade is a non-event. If you're reading this before switching phones, turn sync on now and the rest of this guide becomes optional.

Path 2: Screenshot Import (the Rescue Path)

Most people have screenshots of 2FA QR codes buried in their photo library from past setups. Authenticator App 2FA can read those directly:

  1. On the new phone, open the app and choose screenshot import.
  2. Select the saved QR code screenshots from your photo library.
  3. The app extracts each account's secret and starts generating valid codes immediately.

This also works while you still have the old phone: display each QR code, screenshot it, and import — details in our screenshot import guide.

Path 3: Backup Keys (the Manual Way)

Every service that shows you a QR code also offers a text setup key. If you saved those keys, add each account on the new phone with manual key entry — type or paste the key, and codes resume. If you saved nothing and the old phone is gone, you'll need each service's account-recovery flow; slower, but survivable. Then save your backup keys this time.

The Pre-Upgrade Checklist

  • Enable iCloud sync in Authenticator App 2FA before wiping the old phone.
  • Verify codes appear on the new phone before trading in the old one.
  • Keep backup keys stored for the accounts that matter most.
  • Don't delete the old phone's authenticator until every account has produced a working code on the new one.
