Authenticator QR Image Import Not Working? Fix It Safely

If an authenticator cannot import a QR image, fix the screenshot, confirm it is a TOTP enrollment code, or use the manual setup key without risking a lockout.

The Screenshot You Forgot Is a Backup

A 2FA QR code isn't a one-time token — it encodes the account's permanent secret key. A screenshot of it taken during setup contains everything an authenticator needs to generate valid codes forever. That's why screenshot import is one of the most quietly useful features an authenticator can have: half the people locked out of their codes are one photo-library search away from recovery.

It's also why those screenshots deserve respect: anyone with the image can generate your codes. Keep them locked away — or import them and then delete them.

When Screenshot Import Saves You

  • New phone, no sync: import your old setup screenshots instead of re-doing every account (full walkthrough in the new-phone guide).
  • Single-device setup: the QR code is on the same phone's screen — screenshot it and import, no second device needed.
  • Emailed or saved QR codes: some services deliver QR codes as images; import them directly.
  • Recovering an abandoned authenticator: old screenshots let you rebuild your vault in a new app without touching each service's settings.

Importing in Authenticator App 2FA

  1. Open the app and tap the add/scan button.
  2. Choose Add a screenshot instead of the live camera.
  3. Pick the QR code image from your photo library.
  4. The app decodes the secret and adds the account — the 6-digit code starts rotating immediately.
  5. Verify the code works on the account, then delete the screenshot from your library (the secret now lives in your Face ID-locked vault).

If the QR Image Still Will Not Import

  • Confirm the QR type: it must be an authenticator-enrollment QR code, not a login, payment, recovery, or account-export QR your app does not support.
  • Use the original image: forwarded and compressed screenshots can lose the small squares required for decoding.
  • Keep the quiet zone: include the white border and all three large corner markers; avoid markup, filters, and perspective distortion.
  • Use manual setup: choose “Can't scan?” or “Enter setup key” on the service, then add the secret as a time-based TOTP account.
  • Verify before deleting: confirm one generated code works and save recovery codes before removing the old authenticator.

The Single-Phone Trick

Setting up 2FA used to assume two devices: one showing the QR code, one scanning it. With screenshot import the whole flow happens on one iPhone — open the site in Safari, screenshot the QR code, switch to Authenticator App 2FA, import. Every account in our 2FA setup guide can be added this way, entirely from the phone.
